SSA’s Listing of Impairments (Blue Book Conditions)

The SSA maintains a Listing of Impairments, often called the “Blue Book,” which includes medical conditions that automatically qualify if specific criteria are met. Some of the main categories include:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders: Back injuries, spinal disorders, joint dysfunction, fractures with nonunion, and severe arthritis
  • Neurological disorders: Epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, ALS, peripheral neuropathy
  • Respiratory disorders: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis
  • Cardiovascular conditions: Congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, aneurysms
  • Mental disorders: Depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, PTSD, autism spectrum disorders
  • Cancer: Advanced or aggressive cancers, especially those that are inoperable or recurrent
  • Endocrine disorders: Thyroid disorders, diabetes with severe complications
  • Digestive system disorders: Liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome
  • Genitourinary disorders: Kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant
  • Immune system disorders: Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV/AIDS with complications
  • Hematological disorders: Sickle cell disease, hemophilia

Conditions Not Listed May Still Qualify

If your specific medical issue is not listed in the Blue Book, you can still qualify if:

  • Your condition is medically equivalent in severity to a listed impairment
  • You provide detailed medical evidence proving that your condition prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA)

Key SSDI Medical Qualification Requirements

To qualify for SSDI based on your medical condition:

  • Your disability must last or be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
  • It must prevent you from performing your previous work
  • It must also prevent you from adjusting to any other type of work, based on your age, education, and experience

Proving Your Medical Condition

SSA requires thorough documentation, including:

  • Medical records from doctors, specialists, and hospitals
  • Test results, imaging scans, and lab work
  • Treatment history and compliance with prescribed treatments
  • Statements from treating physicians describing your work limitations in detail
